Two Utah Veterans Homes Earn Top 10 Recognition in Newsweek’s Best Nursing Homes for 2027
By Laurie Wynn, UDVMA
Two of Utah’s Veterans homes have earned national recognition, ranking among the top 10 in the medium-sized category (100-149 beds) in Newsweek’s "America’s Best Nursing Homes for 2027." The Mervyn Sharp Bennion Central Utah Veterans Home in Payson garnered the number one slot, while the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins ranked number eight.
This recognition reflects the dedication of the nurses, caregivers, therapists, support staff, volunteers, and community partners who serve Utah’s veterans every day. Operated by Avalon Health Care in partnership with the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs, the veterans homes in Payson and Ivins are part of a statewide system committed to delivering exceptional skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, and long-term care services. Together with the William E. Christoffersen Salt Lake Veterans Home and the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home, Utah’s four veterans homes provide compassionate, veteran-centered care that honors the service and sacrifice of residents while promoting dignity, independence, and quality of life.
Published in partnership with global research firm Statista, the annual rankings recognize 1,325 nursing homes nationwide. Facilities were evaluated using several measures, including quality of care, staffing, health inspections, recommendations from medical professionals, accreditations, and resident and visitor satisfaction.
For Utah’s veteran community, the recognition carries special significance. Veterans homes provide more than skilled nursing and long-term care. They offer a place where former service members can connect with others who share similar experiences, maintain meaningful relationships and receive the respect they have earned through their service.
The Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs oversees four state Veterans nursing homes. This latest recognition is an achievement worth celebrating and a reminder that honoring military service extends far beyond the battlefield.
